Book review

My first review of the book 100 MIGRATORY was published in the newspaper NSD 16th of May 2014. I’m happy as it was great feedback all through. The author Jan Bergsten started and finished the article by writing:

“There are art projects and then there are art projects with that something extra…”

“… It is a beautiful book with Monica Edmondson´s beautiful glass vessels and with beautiful images from near and far, from the demonstrations (against mining – my comment) in Kallak Jokkmokk to the desert of Saudi Arabia…”

STOLEN!

Stulet_nr_60This vessel no.60 is the one stolen from the exhibition with my hundred vessels of glass, 100 MIGRATORY, at the Museum of Västerbotten sometimes before the 16th of March. It is signed with my name and as vessel number 60/100M. The exhibition will end 11th of May 2014.

For you that was there…it is the small vessel right up at the front on the right half of the combined podium-stage (as on photo here below from the opening).
Size of the vessel: 14 cm high x 13 cm diameter.

The theft is investigated by the police.

Opening night of 100 MIGRATORY

Yes, I know I’m late to update about the opening on the 1st of February 2014 at the Museum om Västerbotten Umeå. However, here it is.

It is now, when I look at all images from the opening of my exhibition 100 MIGRATORY, I start to realise the grandness of the whole thing. I see people in the photos who attended the opening that I never knew were there. So to all of you I didn’t have the chance to meet: Hallo and thank you for coming!

The opening ceremony started by the Museum director Ulrica Grubbström saying a few words about the exhibition and my book. Then Katarina Rimpi gave us the story of the jojk she performed, a jojk that took some time to get to her. Finally she found the answer sitting in front of the warm fire a cold winterday – Monica´s jojk. I got very emotional listening to Katarina and I had to concentrate for a while at the slideshow on the wall just to avoid getting too “teary” – but it was just so strong. Thank you Katarina, gijtto!

Marika Lagercrantz, Counsellor for Cultural Affairs at the Embassy of Sweden in Berlin Germany, gave a touching speech. Marika was one of the abroad recievers of a vessel of glass part of 100 MIGRATORY and she gave a wonderful story of how it was to recieve and keep the glass in Berlin. She also talked about a few stories from other caretakers of a vessel each; from Jenni in Jokkmokk, Ulf at Palma de Mallorca, from Carin at the Embassy of Sweden in Mali. Finally Marika read a poem by Paulus Utsi and Katarina Rimpi was jojking inbetween lines. I know the two of them didn’t make one rehersal of that final performance they gave, as it was just talked briefly about before the opening ceremony – but their performance was like they had worked together for years! Voilà!

From the innermost corner of my heart I want to say thank you to all who attended the opening and to all of you who believed in me and the power of the hundred vessels of glass.

Listen to Kulturradion Special by Kerstin Berggren, a 20 minutes long radioprogram with many of us present at the opening night of 100 MIGRATORY (in swedish). The interviews start 10:30 min into the program.

Carmen Olsson dancing in 100 MIGRATORY

When I finally fully experienced the danceperformance by Carmen Olsson amongst the glass- with music by Anders Rimpi – I got tears in my eyes. So strong at the same time so fragile…To be able to do this choreography and dance in response to 100 MIGRATORY in such a fantastic way makes me believe Carmen must be one of the absolute top choreographers and buto dancers in the world.

Read the Review as a pdf Fragile dance in dialogue with art (in Swedish).

If you haven’t seen this performance you should take the oppertunity. There are performances from the 1st of March until the 9th of March 2014 at the Museum of Västerbotten in the exhibition 100 MIGATORY. Book your ticket at Biljettcentrum.

On Friday the 31st of January I had the pleasure to talk the the Swedish Crownprincess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel. I explained the thoughts behind the glass, the vessel and my art work 100 MIGRATORY at the same time media from Sweden and all over the world were there to get some pics of the Royals. The plane from Stockholm was delayed and in the meantime I had to take some photos myself of the media waiting. All other photos by Gunilla Nordlund, Sveriges Radio. Thank you Gunilla!

And if you wonder: Victoria has an injury from the end of last year skiing in the Alps.

On Radio – cultural program today!!

When I heard this radio program yesterday I started to realise what I have been part of this last opening weekend. Unexpected, unreal and just such a huge positive response for the exhibition 100 MIGRATORY, from all over the world.

Listen to the program (all in Swedish except the interview with the Australian ambassador Gerald Thomson) today Tuesday at 6.15 pm Sveriges Radio P1. It is Kulturradion Special by Kerstin Berggren about the opening weekend of Umeå 2014 European Capital of Culture. 100 MIGRATORY review start about 12 minutes into the program and last for 20 minutes! Hear the Swedish actress and Counsellor for Cultural Affairs at the Swedish embassy in Berlin Germany ,Marika Lagercrantz, who held the opening speech and jojk by Katarina Rimpi as well as Carmen Olsson talking about her danceperformance.

You can also find the radio program here as well as some images of  the Crownprincess Victoria and Prince Daniel when they have a close look at vessel no. 53.

A Crownprincess and 100 MIGRATORY

On Friday I get a visit to my exhibition by the Crownprincess Victoria, her husband Daniel and the Museum Director Ulrica Grubbström. 10 minutes. I wish the glass and the images tell their own story as I’m warned the 70 media representatives – that´s also going to be in my exhibition space that time – might make such a loud noice with their cameras so my visitors might not hear what I say.

Should be fun and kind of a contrast to my ordinary working days as an artist in my glass workshop and studio in an old barn just outside Tärnaby. Lucky enough I sometimes get a visit to my studio in Bäcknäs by Carin and Harry the dog.

100 MIGRATORY in Glass Magazine

Photo: Carl-Johan Utsi

Photo: Carl-Johan Utsi

100 MIGRATORY is featured in GLAS – Architecture Design Environment Technique; a magazine for the Glass Industry Association no. 1 2013 on page 38-39. The image is from the local journey of the hundret glass vessels to the Ulldevis mountains in February 2012. It should soon be an article on www.tidningenglas.se about the organisation I am a member of called Glass Academy – the Swedish glass artists and designers. The article will refer to the image in the paper magazine.

And…
I know this image is a press photo belonging to the project 100 MIGRATORY, yet I am persistent to tell media that the photographers namne should always be written along the photo. That is not done in this magazine so I write it here.

Anja Pärson, Ingemar Stenmark and 100 MIGRATORY

Photo: Marianne Lindgren

It was the night of the nights in Tärnaby with the visit of the World Champion alpine skiers Anja Pärson and Ingemar Stenmark at the opening of the international alpine races Ingemartrofén. It was a top opportunity for the worlds most successful ski club Tärna IK Fjällvinden, together with the local business alliance called PR-föreningen, to say thank you and good luck to Anja Pärson in her future persuits. She recently retired from professional  alpine racing. The club and the business alliance gave one of the hundred vessels (part of the art project 100 MIGRATORY) as a thank you gift to both Anja and Ingemar. Anja is now the owner of no. 61/100 M ( 19 world championship medals plus 42 gold medals in World Cup races). Ingemar Stenmark recieved no. 86/100M ( he won 86 World Cup races during his career). However, they can take ownership of their glass vessels first after the final exhibition of 100 MIGRATORY in 2014, as the vessels have yet some world-wide journeys to undertake before then.
